WHAT is the fate of neural stem cells?

Neural Stem Cell Differentiation
  • Neural stem cells turn into two general categories of brain cells: neurons and glia.

  • Glial cells can be divided into two other cell types: oligodendrocytes and astrocytes.

  • Neural stem cells differentiate into 3 different cell types
    • Neurons, oligodendrocytes, astrocytes
  • Neurons are responsible for processing and transmitting information throughout the body via electrical and chemical signals.

  • Oligodendrocytes provide support and insulation to neurons in the central nervous system.

  • Astrocytes provide nutrients to nervous tissue and maintain the balance of ions in the brain.
