WHERE are neural stem cells located?

Subventricular Zone
  • Neural stem cells are developed in a region of the brain called the subventricular zone

  • The subventricular zone is a paired brain structure placed between the walls of the lateral ventricles in the brain.

    • ventricle: hollow open vessel in the brain

  • Following the formation of neural stem cells in the subventricular zone, the cells disperse to other areas of the brain, where they are needed.

  • Neural stem cells are located in the brain and some parts of the spinal chord.
  • Unlike other stem cells, neural stem cells are not found in other organs in the body.
